All signals will always be lost in a heavy thunder storm…..Even the very strong channels….
Is the new sat Switch you bought…. a big secret..??…….

Alistair, beg to differ but I think storm activity is the big offender tonight. I have always found storms give the biggest problem when they are approaching, not when directly overhead. This time, the storm just took a long time to arrive..!!
I was out till 8pm but my scan tells me that had I been home at 6pm I would have lost ALL channels – never happened to me before… Also at 8.30 there was another dip and I lost CH4HD and ITVHD for a short time. Just look at the scan below and you can see that this has not been a normal evening….!!!

Oh, right. Well in my defence I merely said that because where I live no storms whatsoever, not even sure it rained, actually I’m pretty sure it didn’t, but then not having measuring instruments I certainly trust your judgment.

Morning Alistair, apart from the exceptional effect of the storm, guess I should aplologise – signal could still be crap…!!! This morning, CNR is back to the level of 14th May – all the improvement of the last ten days (1 to 1,5db) has been wiped out. It’s still very cloudy here so hope signal improves with the weather…however I appreciate that all my measuring doesn’t make things any better… 🙁

During last nights storm I lost only HD channels, SD was fine, just down a bit on S&Q.
    Cheers,
    Wilf.

Err…. no. Just a normal Spaun diseqc switch. Wanted to try out putting two sats through the same box. Problem is finding time to do it.

Alistair, interesting observation from Sambracitain in France – like him, I noticed a lot of sand on my car at the start of the storm activity at about 4pm yesterday. Perhaps we had a combined sand/electrical storm which caused havoc over a six hour period. Sun now shining and signal still climbing, 11-12db now.

No good with the diseqc switch. All Astra 1 channels good. Lost all Astra 2 UK domestic. Quality went down from 40% to 18%. Must be that 2dB through loss they talk about.

I’m beginning to feel the villian of the peace – first my friend in Sesto C. installs a 1m dish with Opticum LNB and new Humax HD to replicate my system – results not entirely satisfactory and certainly not in line with mine. Now you Tim buy the Spaun on my suggestion and Q goes down the drain……porto sfiga….???

I don’t feel like that at all, Derek. These things are all hit and miss. There are so many variables involved, Apart from the good quality of your box and the fact that you’ve got a feedhorn on the LNB, I’m starting to think that you may be in a fortuitous hotspot, especially considering the not entirely perfect results of your friend setting up exactly the same system as you.
Re: diseqc. The signal from Astra 1 through the switch was perfectly accaptable, so there’s nothing wrong with the switch. It’s all down to those pesky spot beam transponders! The switch will go in the garage and await its hour – There will be one, I’m sure 🙂

Good Morning all its not all doom and gloom Dereck you were my bench mark and it worked for me.

PS: Remember, I tried out the switch on a free-to-air box that cost me 50 euros. I also noticed that the f-connector on the end of my astra 2 cable probably needs to be re-fitted (though sky transponder is still 100/90). There’s loads of elements I could be tweaking if only I had the time (and didn’t get annoyed with the 200 m of tangled cables at the back of the TV unit :))

Thanks guys 🙂 . Tim, just for the record, I don’t have a feedhorn – don’t think it’s necessary on a 1m dish. I do have a rain shield that looks a “shade” like a feedhorn..!!

All LNBs have a feedhorn….on standard 40mm LNbs …you can’t see it …..it’s hidden behind the white plastic cap…..
But Tim probably means a C120 Flange Feedhorn…….

Tim…. thats a strange one with your switch…..usually its Just a small signal Strength loss……You should send it back …It might be a duff one

Sorry about the tiny pic of the example of a C120 flange Feedhorn…..i can’t change it….?
The other pic of a standard 40mm LNB….is a naked Opticum Quattro

Well, a 2dB loss is pretty significant, isn’t it?

Actually, I did have some difficulty getting the connectors into the switch. Did I miss something. You just push them in, and then screw right?

If the switches made a significant signal quality loss…….I for one……certainly wouldn’t be using them…..

Maybe double check your connections…and be sure no outer strands of cable are touching the centre copper wire in the connectors………..
Just a thought …you are using proper double shielded sat cable …?…Right….

Cable is top quality. All the connections are clean.
I just find that the hole inside the switch sockets is a bit tight to get the copper core into.

OK. I did it. It works. Very bizarre though. After automatic channel search on both dishes/switches – astra 2 showed nothing on any channel. I then did a manual search on a single transponder and, as if by magic, all of them appeared. That is, all of those that had been found on the automatic search. Must be a foible of the box – I obviously did something which activated the other channel list. Anybody got any ideas – it’s a very cheap Storm box.

So Derek: Kudos to you – switch is good and it works.
Steve: Thanks for making me try it again.

Yes..I hand this prob on a old Pace box…….I had to scan the 2 sats 19,2 & 28,2….without the switch connected …then after scan of both sats…. was done reconnect the switch ….It drove me bonkers at the time..trying to figure it out…… don’t change your new switch settings…just manually connect the 2 cables when scanning each sat position…..

BTW…Very bad signal tonight……All the H channels gone….The V channels just about hanging on.,…..All HD long gone….. 🙁 …. I think it will have to be ZDF HD …for the football tonight….
