Signal down last night but not catastrophic – From 8pm till 11pm, CNR was steady with my 2F HD frequencies being the lowest (as usual):
11127 – _8,4db
11097 – _9,0db
10714 – _9,5db
10847 – 10,0db
10758 – 10,4db
10906 – 10,4db
At 10 pm, ITVHD was giving me s70/q65 on the Humax so very watchable (I also enjoyed the game, unusually for me!!!)
Just for comparison Steve, ZDFHD on 19°E gave s80/q100 at the same time (it’s no surprise of course).
Tim, agree the connectors on the Spaun are a tight fit but I had no problem and better than being loose – glad you got it up and running 🙂25/05/2014 at 3:15 pm #8603
Derek….Finally ….I have a stronger signal than you… 🙂 …ZDF HD was very strong..100 Q.. 100 S all evening.!!……from the Humax Freesat in other sat mode!…….
( Ive only just found out ..the Humax freest boxes can actually control two dishes with diseqc switch connection….Doh…!! …)
I read you was getting new..Quad LNB..?….why not Try a Otagon Quad with PLL..(phased lock loop)…..It has had great reviews on other Satellite Sites…
After last nights Tv black out..I’m gonna get one to test…..to try and find a Little bit more signal………But i’m probably just deluding myself….I imagine really need a Raven 240 Cm dish for good summertime evening reception ….If these black outs continue……….I’ll have to save up my pennys …for that idea….25/05/2014 at 3:54 pm #8605
Hi Steve, I proposed an Invacom Black Ultra after the comparison of signal I just completed with Madiran. We noted that I have a much bigger variation in signal quality between frequencies than he does – also more variation over 24 hours. He uses an Invacom BU and thinks the difference could be due to the LNB, the Invacom having a flatter response than my Opticum. However, could be a risk in case the Invacom “levels out” the signal of all my frequencies, but to the level of today’s weakest….!!!! I’m not in a hurry so I’ll give it some more thought. Thanks for the suggestion of the Octagon – just read that PLL technology could give a 1db improvement in CNR, not to be sniffed at for 20 euri.25/05/2014 at 5:03 pm #8606
All channels looking good so far tonight.
Box is “Strong” btw not “Storm”. Very cheap knock-off. Humax box is looking better by the second.25/05/2014 at 5:04 pm #8607
Steve I did tell u that xx25/05/2014 at 5:54 pm #8608
Inverto BU, Derek, Inverto not Invacom, have you been at the g’n’t again?
Steve, these Octagon jobbies sound interesting, there has been some discussion here: http://www.astra2forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=848
do you think they are worth trying? My OH expressed some displeasure at the suggestion that I might buy ‘not another bloody LNB, you’ve got 4 already”25/05/2014 at 7:31 pm #8609
Madiran, no G&T today but I had just come back from a pretty heavy and wet lunch when I posted..!! Got my Ins & Ops a bit mixed up 🙂 . Thanks for putting me straight….
Tim, signal held up nicely tonight, all channels between 10 and 11db CNR…25/05/2014 at 7:36 pm #8610
Villa…Really….?…I can’t ever remember you recommending a Channel master 2,40 ..to me in the past…considering…2E ..has only recently been in service … 🙄 … But if you will buy me one …..great stuff… 🙂 …..
Madrian,,,,Only 4 Lnbs…? what a light weight …….I have a cupboard full of LNB’s….mainly useless Inverto products..Black pro octo…black pro Quattro c120…and black Ultra Quad….Alps Quad…Invercom quattro C120 and invercom 40mm Quad….
….only the Opticum’s ..seem to work for me….?….
But testing a Octagon LNB..Will be a new experience …..We shall see..??…
BTW….All signals ok tonight at 10,30pm….about 60 Q..(Humax )….but still….no ITV 1 HD london….I don’t get It…..What is the prob with ITV 1 HD..???26/05/2014 at 5:21 am #8613
Steve, at the risk of being boring and stating the obvious, ITVHD and Ch4HD have always been my weakest frequencies. During the evening, they are always 1,5db lower than BBC1,2,3 HD and at least 1,5db lower than SD channels.26/05/2014 at 7:44 am #8615
Derek: Am I right in thinking that the Humax box has only one scart output on the back (as well as the HDMI)?26/05/2014 at 7:55 am #8616
Yes Tim, Uscite: 1 x Scart, 1 x HDMI, 1 x SPDF, 1 x Ethernet, 1 x LNB Out……
Despite rain, signal holding up, all channels between 11 and 12db CNR.26/05/2014 at 7:56 am #8617
Steve, I have examined the Opticum and Best LNB castings and they are certainly identical ,with only one adjustment screw –the ” normal ” LNB would need two ( 9750 and 10600 Mhz ).
The label on the Best states that it has Quartz Crystal Control ( needs only one trimmer )–so it is reasonable to conclude that both models are PLL types. This probably accounts for their good perfomance, with better frequency stability and lower phase noise.26/05/2014 at 8:08 am #8618

Sorry, mistake in original post, should read “During the evening, they are always 1db lower”26/05/2014 at 8:10 am #8619
Teo…so Ive ordered a identical LNB ..to the Opticum I have already… 🙁 ..?…brilliant……
Tim …you will struggle to get a new / latest Sat box with 2 scart connections….Scart is not the connection of choice for most these days…..
Having said that….There is nothing wrong with a Good RGB scart connection …SD channels are clearer with RGB scart….compared to HDMI…..because the pic is not upscaled to 720p or 1080i….its in the original format of 576i…..with no loss in upscaling26/05/2014 at 8:33 am #8621
Steve, no, the Octagon is another PLL LNB , but not identical—higher gain ? 65 db.26/05/2014 at 9:54 am #8623
Hi all, excuse the invasion from Germany (?!?!?!) but this seems to be the thread with most activity at the moment.
My results are consistant with everyone else I think with Saturday being a very weak reception evening.
Thursday 22nd BBC SD survived OK (BBC 1 East Mids).
Friday 23rd BBC SD breaking up for about 30 mins (Have I got news for you streamed live to TV using iplayer instead).
Saturday 24th BBC SD Very weak, went off early – missing for about 2 hours.
Sunday 25th BBC SD OK on some regional varations, watched BBC Channel Islands (968) all evening – no break up at all.
In Austria (slightly closer to Italy 🙂 )this coming weekend, so no opportunity for dish tweaking, and the Triax TD78 down there certianly doesn’t get the BBC anymore, I installed it when 1N took active duty and worked great for 2 years 🙂
Works perfectly as would expect for all Pan European Sky Channels, but so did my previous sky mini dish, even when snowing.
When 1N took over I even used to get odd glimpes of a picture using that mini dish (the small one, not the scotish size).26/05/2014 at 11:37 am #8624

Yes. I thought that might be the case. I need three outputs: 1 to TV, 1 to DVD recorder and 1 to AV sender. At the moment, I’ve got a scart adaptor that splits to scart and RCA – It works OK. I was thinking of using that in the scart socket (obviously) and HDMI straight to TV. Is the quality that bad on SD signals?26/05/2014 at 11:40 am #8625
Hi Phil, today I’m being more boring than usual but your post brings up the subject I discussed with Steve a while ago.
We are all in the same boat regarding 2E and 2F reception and share the interests of all contributors wherever they live.
Steve suggested a thread simply called “Astra 2E/2F Europe Reception”. I would go one further and say “Astra 2E/2F Reception” – if you are not in Europe it’s most unlikely that you will have anything to contribute…!!!
To test if this proposal is as popular as UKIP, I will open a new thread, “Astra 2E/2F Reception – June” – look forward to see if it gets your votes 🙂 .26/05/2014 at 4:46 pm #8642
Tim…. re Scart and HDNI…….sorry I was referring to SKY HD boxes…..truly awful at upscaling SD channels via HDMI….maybe by design …to try to get people to upgrade to the HD package or just bad components in the Sky HD box ..I don’t know…..
The Humax boxes i have …are ok at Upscaling SD pic to HDMI….no need to worry……
BTW…. My very best box for low signal is a Strong 7805 HD generic box….with a excellent sensitive tuner…http://www.amazon.it/Strong-SRT-7805-HD/dp/B0043EDWHW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1401126342&sr=8-1&keywords=Strong+7805
It can be had for as little as 50 euro..if you look at the other offers area below the main site….!….(Quite tempted myself..to get another one)…..
Derek ..are you sure your Humax don’t have the red , white and yellow RCA composite connection..?….07/02/2015 at 10:58 am #11850
Hi all – very strange but today all channels are working here in Padua.
I have a 1oo cm dish and the signal is a bit of a mess given the cloudy day (between 40% and 50%) but I used to have 0% last time I checked?
Does anybody knows why this is happening?07/02/2015 at 11:03 am #11851
Yes , I noticed an increase in signal for the past few days, but I still lose all channels around 4pm08/02/2015 at 12:30 pm #11855
Yep, me too noticed that the signal goes to 0 on the afternoon. Google searches gave nothing about this phenomenon08/02/2015 at 5:31 pm #11856
Yes , I noticed an increase in signal for the past few days, but I still lose all channels around 4pm
Given that we are very close, could you tell me what kind of dish do you have please?08/02/2015 at 5:42 pm #11857
Humax Freesat HD, 1.5m Dish, 0.1 twin LNB.
Yesterday I was unable to watch the entire 3 pm rugby match on BBC One HD, today at 5pm I still get 80% signal, 70% quality…. it’s a real mistery08/02/2015 at 5:51 pm #11858
Thanks mate. I noticed that the HD channels got lost before the SD ones.
