Dampfungsregler has arrived but we have heavy rain at. Moment so I won’t be trying it out tonight. I am a little doubtful as to wether I should start tinkering again as I have had 24/7 reception on 2e & F for past 3 weeks even HD has been stable, however finger is itching!!!06/05/2014 at 3:30 pm #8041
When you use the dishpointer web site. Which satallite do you choose? I have found 4 28.2 astras on the list. I think I have the wrong one?
Your Location Satellite Data Dish Setup Data
Name: 28.2E, 23.5E(c), 19.2E
Azimuth (true): 164.4°
Azimuth (magn.): 161.8°
Dish Skew [?]: 92.8°
Or this one.
Your Location Satellite Data Dish Setup Data
Name: 28.2E ASTRA 1N | ASTRA 2A | ASTRA 2D | ASTRA 2F
Azimuth (true): 158.4°
Azimuth (magn.): 155.8°
LNB Skew [?]: -6.7°
This would make quite a difference. I am aiming at the first? Hmm.06/05/2014 at 5:06 pm #8045
Joe, I would honestly buy one of those 10€ sat meters from amazon. It will help you massively, really simple to use and your dish will be much more accurately aligned than it is now.06/05/2014 at 5:47 pm #8046
The 2nd. The first is for a multi lnb setup.06/05/2014 at 8:25 pm #8047
I borrowed a meter today. The thing just beeps all the time. I turned down the sensitivity to the lowest setting. Just beeps all the time showing a perfect signal. It wasn’t until I moved completely off line that it showed no signal. Now I have lost what I had before. I am still wondering if a feedhorn is what is needed to get more out of the dish. That the lnb just can’t cope with the dish. At the moment completely clueless. The iphone showed I have 7.4 degrees elevation. The dish has a 25 degrees offset. That makes it 0.1 degrees off target. I suppose I could try a second meter. In a shop I was told that they are complete useless. So right now. I seem to agree.07/05/2014 at 6:07 am #8049
Joe, sounds like the meter you borrowed is duff..!! Like Phil, my experience of these cheap meters is positive – gives you a first fix on the “group” of satellites at, say, 28°E. However, for fine tuning, you then need to decide which transponder frequency you want to optimise on and have something to measure the signal as you make changes. Most amateurs get by with their receiver for this purpose, preferably connected with the TV close to the dish (or using the wife to relay readings in a loud voice..!!). Last time I tweaked, I used the TBS5922 USB receiver connected to the PC running CrazyScan software. Found that my initial setup using just the cheap sat meter was “almost perfect” (beginners luck..??).07/05/2014 at 9:12 am #8050
Now I have lost what I had before.
The iphone showed I have 7.4 degrees elevation. The dish has a 25 degrees offset. [/quote]
When you have your pic back, use a marker pen on the pole to indicate the dishes vertical alignment – then if ypu try re-aligning it gives you a starting point.
Maybe your iphone is accurate, but I found on my Ipad the apps were not that accurate and pointed too far West.07/05/2014 at 9:46 am #8052
Joe, I can only think of two reasons, like Derek has stated it is duff or it was being completely overloaded by your 1.9m (if I recall correctly) dish size. Did you also buy an antenuator (Dampfungsregler) – this would help if it was an overload problem.
I’ve had a duff one of these meters in the past, alothough it was duff due to it had being dropped several times from a significant height but honestly they are very good, much better than iphone/ipad apps in my opinion, in fact not even comparable they are streets ahead.
I’ve set up many many dishes in the UK, Germany and Austria using those meters with fantastic results even in the Astra 2D days, before the wonderful and now forgotten 1N – only now with Astra 2F and Astra 2E have I decided to go for something better, but the something better gets only the final bits of signal.
Using a 10€ meter on my gibby 1.5 I was getting BBC SD bar maybe 1 hour in the evening on a bad day, on a good day it survived all evening, and now I’ve got that solid all evening with the extra something better solution thanks to Twol’s advice.
I stand by the fact that those little 10€ bleeper meters are actually incredible good for what they are and cost, you should be able to get 90% of the way there, if not completely with that size of dish.
Don’t give up!
From the testing that Steve has done, the differences between feedhorn and none feedhorn is marginal, with the feedhorn giving marginally better results.
can’t recall the brand of your dish, but the feedhorn from the same company designed for the dish is probably the best choice, and my invacom c120 quad is doing well – also gives a low strength and high quality, which is a good partnership for the 10€ bleeper meter, certainly won’t overload it.07/05/2014 at 3:58 pm #8059
1850 hrs very heavy rain but all holding up ITVHD at C/N 24 UTV HD C/N 3007/05/2014 at 4:46 pm #8060
Phil….I found…. on my 150 Dish …. A standard Opticum or IBU…. gets very close The Gibby feedhorn / Invacom performance on some channels…….The Opticum is the best on Ch5 & 1TV 1 HD…..IBU is slightly better on BBC 1 SD…..
My modded Opticum Quattro / feedhorn combo…is the only one… so far that can usually hold on to ITV 1 HD all evening……
I’m Currently Testing…My DIY C120 flange conversion Inverto Black Ultra Quattro & Gibby Feedhorn…..
Ch5 ITV 1 HD is already looking a bit low on the IBU…..But BBC looking a bit higher than the Opticum & FH was…..
But as my problem / weakest channels are ..CH5 ,ITV HD,Ch4HD……Ill prob stick with the DIY Opticum /Feedhorn Combo…..07/05/2014 at 5:52 pm #8061
@steve…. I think you could go into business making these specials…. A thought for the future!07/05/2014 at 5:53 pm #8062
@Joe: We are all jumping to conclusions here with no facts…..what type of meter did you actually try?07/05/2014 at 7:06 pm #8063
The meter was a schwaiger sf70.
I purchased the one from amazon yesterday. Just waiting for it to arrive. I can’t give up. But it does frustrate the hell out of a long weekend standing on a ladder. But I know the final results are worth it. The dish I got from ewerk-online. I think a no namer. I will mark the set up at the next attempt. My weakest channel was ch4 hd have it at 11:00 for maybe an hour. The strongest was london bbc1 40%. Stays until 17:00. After that all is gone. Hope the new meter will do more. I can see the tv with a mirror on the floor. But this hasn’t helped. Even when I see pixels. I can’t get it to be better. But I think I might be moving the dish too much. I think the 158 degrees is hard to find as the compass is screwed by the dish. I keep aiming at the tree and this gets me back on track. Thanks for the help.07/05/2014 at 7:39 pm #8064
Twol…..Don’t speak to soon…..you haven’t tested one yet………but I’m looking forward..to seeing your results with my Opticum Quattro LNB conversion…….as you have better signal measuring gear than me…….
But yea..The Opticum Quattro ” White Ultra GTI Special ” works for me. 🙂 ………..
Joe..have you checked your “PM’s”…or…. is my offer of help not required..?…..08/05/2014 at 1:57 pm #8067
May be of interest from skyinmadrid
“BBC TO SHOW DEDICATED COMMONWEALTH GAMES CHANNEL
The BBC has begun testing a new channel in preparation for the Commonwealth Games, which begin in Glasgow on 23rd. July. The test broadcast is on 11.469 H, 22.000, 5/6, Astra 2E/2F UK beam, a previously unused frequency in the band occupied up to now by Eutelsat’s Eurobird. It may be the first move in the transfer of Eutelsat’s previously disputed frequencies to SES’s satellites, and may signal the end of Eurobird at 28.2º east.
Sky have opened a test HD channel on 10864H 23000 â…” DVB-S2/8PSK, Astra 2E UK beam today, labelled 4035, currently carrying no picture. I haven’t looked for PM or my profile page.
That’s why I haven’t added the signature.
I haven’t see any PM. Sorry.
In advance. Any offer of support is greatly appreciated.
I will look now.11/05/2014 at 8:29 am #8092
Steve- we’ll I fitted the attenuator last night but was unable to gain any significant improvement on what I already had. Guess I must have been lucky in obtaining the max with all the dish and LNB tweaking. But it was wort a try.11/05/2014 at 4:54 pm #8094
Thanks for the call. I tried the older LNB and it was not as strong as the ultra. I swapped back. I will send you a PM later.11/05/2014 at 5:49 pm #8095
Has everyone else’s signal been down since mid-week and over the weekend? Really been struggling and after a great period of reception?11/05/2014 at 6:08 pm #8096
Yes, signal is way down here.
I cannot even get Ch4+1 SD tonight. And it is only 9pm in Munich. 🙁
Sad. Fargo and TopGear tonight.
Max11/05/2014 at 8:06 pm #8097
Max, thanks for that! At least I know my dish hasn’t moved in the recent rain and gales!
Steve, Twol, Terry, Derek, how you guys doing for signal?11/05/2014 at 8:14 pm #8098
It is windy tonight and I thought the dish had moved. So I tried to fine tune it using my meter but could not get anything. I ended up fine tuning 11914H Pick Ireland on 2E because I could not lock onto any of the UK beam TPs. 🙁 At least it is not worse than before now.
What is going on? @steve: What is the situation in the West of the city?
Max11/05/2014 at 8:21 pm #8099
Yes, signal down, AGAIN, it is sad and really annoying, anyone questioning if stable reception is actually gonna be possible at all?11/05/2014 at 8:21 pm #8100
Phil and Max…….”your wish is my command” 🙂 ……yea…..signal well down….ITV 1HD & BBC HD ‘s Gone at 10 pm ish……..
all channels including Ch4HD ( slight pixation on Ch 5 ‘s ) OK and just about held on all evening …. at the very min 50 Q Humax …30 Q sky HD….. 🙁 …….
This Evening Low Signal….is now at the very limit of my Dish/LNB setup…..I Just hope it don’t go any Lower…??
Terry …it was worth a try…. Only 3 euros lost….
Max ..have you tried different regions of BBC / Ch4…?…maybe some are slightly stronger than others……
Edit… 11-10 pm…BBC HD back…(Just in time for MOTD)…at 50-60 Q (Humax) …ITV 1 hd ..still missing….
