I’m thinking of upgrading my old Pioneer  VSX 919 AH AV surround amp…to a newer model……….preferably from Pioneer or Onkyo ….but open to any recommendations  from other good HIFI  manufactures…………….

obviously… it probably  goes with out saying………all Samsung 5,1  AV Amps……or…. anything else available from Samsung are excluded …………

Excuse my ignorance Steve but WHY???? I’m not a particular Samsung fan (my audio setup is Sony) but curious to understand the whys of your “Korean Aversion”.

Probably………in my case………its just the love of Quality AV kit…..or  brand name  snobbery  or  “brand loyalty” or just loyalty…….

…..in a” loyalty” way ……thats why I aways post my  on “Robs”……and not very often on other sat forums……(the one  full of dickhead “so called”…. “staff members”…?)………………its just my nature…………

But I do dislike …..with a passion…… the way Samsung just churn out similar looking cheap copies ….of quality AV  electro gear…….…and drive the price / quality down………..and eventually choice…….

Long live Pioneer ,Onkyo,Panasonic  Denon,KEF, Canton….and all other top quality AV Manufactures….

    ……..especially  Pioneer 🙂

    Edit …and  Sony of course…. 🙂 …….

I am totally with Steve on this. Samsung are a chip company that churns out endless products where it thinks it can make money, in the process outspending the whole industry on Marketing/Advertising to convince people to buy. They are not innovators but seize on other peoples innovations.

My experiences both with their products and people (I have provided PR support for them at CeBIT for my sins) is not good – any company that ends up with their Company President needing a Presidential pardon for fraud (Samsung defrauded the Korean government) says a lot.

Now the Chinese are doing to them what they have tried to do to everybody else.

In the meantime I love my Onkyo AV equipment…… and my Panasonic TV!!

Thanks for your comments guys 🙂 . For my sins, I have just purchased a gift for my daughter, a Galaxy s10.5 Amoled tablet which was highly recommended in several reviews. Wouldn’t call it cheap at around €500 but for me the quality (at least the fit and finish) looks great..!! To be seen how it performs but it promises a lot….

I got the missus a Samsung 10″ tablet for her birthday – bit cheaper than yours, Derek (250 reduced from 350- old model I expect) – and it works great.

I’m also thinking of getting a Samsung phone – mostly because they plug and play with Linux computers.

Derek & Tim, the only point I would make is that Samsung provide the hardware, the real guts of both your products is the Android operating system, which requires real innovation (I hate to say this about Google!), ideas and good people to write and produce the software – Samsung are just one of the myriad users of the Android system, which is why they are being beaten to death by the Chinese chip companies.

I have no doubt that there are some really good Samsung bargains at Xmas, as they are finding it harder to sell anything at close to list price, as their losses mount. ………….. whereas the company that designs the whole package (and even shores up Samsung,s hardware revenues) keeps ploughing on!

All fair points, Twol. What phone would you recommend then? Around 100 euros. which my computer can see. I know 100 euros is not much, but that’s the budget. Oh, and it has to use a normal Sim size – not the micro (long story…..)

(Cos the Missus has got a Sony Xperia with Android and I have to access it with my pirated installation of Win 7 under Virtual Box 🙂 )

Derek…….Nice present for your daughter…..She will be overjoyed……..

But…….wasn’t Samsung…taken to court and fined millions for their Galaxy tab….for being a directly copy the Apple iPad ….?…..

Is anyone gonna recommend a new 5,1 Surround amp….?… 🙂

Sorry Steve, very ignorant about Samsung court actions (also about 5.1 amps…!!!)….. OK, so Samsung may be a band of crooks but also when you see what goes on in Italy you tend to lose faith in the existence of business ethics in the 21st century. Having worked for some years in an American company, I must say our friends over the pond seem to do more than most to run an honest ship….

    maybe……. 2 tin cans connected with string….. should be considered 🙂 ……..

    But seriously…..maybe a refubished..or 2nd hand phone………might be in your 100 euro budget…..?……….

……You do mean a no contract new phone..?…right…?…as in  …pay as you go………?…….

[/quote]Actually I have no problems with people buying Samsung phone as long as they get a really good deal!

The last 2 phones I bought off Ebay a new windows phone for €100 and recently a more expensive one for my wifes nephew, so that may be an option

so the choice could be a android or win phone, although the latter is short on apps.

    Approval granted Derek!

I don’t care what people buy as long as it meets their needs, and if its Samsung that they get it for the lowest price possible!

The Onkyo 535…looks nice apart from the  exposed inputs on the front…… but…..It only has 1 Optical audio input and no Internet radio or apple airplay………….Its basically what i have now…….but with less inputs………

I quite like the look of this VSX-924 from Pioneer…….

    http://www.amazon.de/Pioneer-VSX-924-K-Steuerung-Internetradio-Wiedergabe/dp/B00KFZWLEI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418809589&sr=8-1&keywords=Pioneer+AV

But more research on spec is needed……….And a trip to a HIFi shop will necessary……to check things out properly…..

Pioneer looks good (pioneer have always been good!), and if Airplay is a must have then the decision is made! Also Onkyo have moved from 2 -> 1 optical on almost all new range….. Not sure why, they must believe optical is dead.

I went the Apple TV route purely for Ipad video/picture access. Also with all my audio library on NAS, I went the Sonos route which means I can play internet radio/streamed music/my NAS music library anywhere in the house rather than locked into the AV box……. A waste of the Av’s features but better flexibility  and means my wife can play what she wants, while I can play my personal music……. Although certainly not the cheapest route!…. But then there is enough technology in this house to run a busy office.

I ‘ll have to have a rethink…..The Pioneer VSX-924 ….also only has 1 optical and only 1 RCA analogue audio in connections……….a lot less than my current Amp……

Plenty of HDMI connections tho……..but I’m not keen on the HDMI loop thru…method….as that means i need the amp switched on … when just watching TV with normal  sound from the tv…………

Or put your sat reciver hdmi out to a hdmi splitter… Means you use 2 hdmi inputs on the TV one direct with both audio/video and one indirect with video only… A bit weird but will work… Just choose a splitter that outputs both audio and video.

Yes the HDMI splitter is a option………But strange the reduction in connections….Like with the latest Tv’s……with less scart  and audio connection options than 2010 models……Can we blame  Samsung for this problem  …?…. 🙂 …….

The latest AV amps seem a backward step………I need too many RCA and Optical  inputs…….RCA connections are… iPod dock…..Generic Sat receiver….DVB-T tv audio output….and Digital RCA from the Sky Box……..Optical … Bluray player  and Apple Tv box…

this is the rear of my old 919…lots of connection possibilities 🙂 …

wow, reminds me of my old Leak (there’s a name to remember) 2000. (Sorry for the repeat, managed to lose the msg with a smiley)

I guess it’s called progress – mind you really pleased to see the end of Scart, pain in the backside.

Eventually Sky moved on and provided Dolby via hdmi, leaving the one optical for my Apple TV. So all my inputs (6) are via hdmi plus one optical.

it’s one of those painfull moments, stay with your current gear, or move on, either way not much fun, and possibly expensive
