This morning I have had a DISASTER!
My Panasonic Sky SD box used for just viewing the Sky Freesat channels (with the freesat card for localisation) has given up. I turned it off, I turned it on, and now I cant get it out of Standby. :'(
So it seems I now have to locate another box.
MY question is if I obtain a box that is NOT the old type Standard SD box (Im assuming a Sky HD box), will it still work for me without me needing to buy/pay any subscription? (I am not bothered about any HighDef or hard drive capabilities I am simply interested in receiving the freesat free channels but if there is an alternative to get extra for little or no money that you know of then I am all ears)
Thanks07/01/2015 at 10:29 am #11544
A nice Humax Freesat PVR  is the way to go Jim………Even tho its a HD box it will still work fine with your SD Tv …..(The Humax  HDR has 2 Scart connectors)……..but you will lose Sony Tv…(If Sony tv still FTV? )………But easy recording with a 7day Epg…….also the bonus with the Humax PVR its possible to record 2 channels  with only 1 cable connection …the Humax also (inportantly) has excellent senstive tuners  …..I just seen this 2nd hand one on Ebay……..
Or any generic Digital sat box will work OK…But No 7 day EPG will be available ..! and you will have to arrange the channels into order  and update manually…..07/01/2015 at 10:45 am #11545
His listing says:
“you can just swap the boxes and it will work.but you do need too (two!) cables from from the LNB to Watch one Channel when you are you recording another hope this is helpful”
which suggests contrary to what you said about recording on 1 cable – and i do only have one LNB cable feed. What is right? (Unfortunately he is only selling and posting to UK too as he CLAIMS that ebay prevent him from changing the postage ability. No good for me being in Italy)
I do have an external PVR box already that automatically kicks in and records when the AUTOVIEW feature of a program is activated (some ‘satlink’ signal is sent out of the sky box and activates my PVR). Out of interest do these generic boxes have autoview features? Also how do these generic boxes handle the localisation of the regional channels such as ITV?07/01/2015 at 11:04 am #11547
Also, how come we would lose Sony TV with a generic box? (Yes, it is still on the Sky Freesat channel list)07/01/2015 at 11:06 am #11548
I have 2 of these humax freesat PVR Â boxes………It is possible to record 2 channels with one input….if you loop thru the coax..see pic………..Tho….not all channels are available ….for example if recording BBC1 London……Ch4 ,ch5 BBC2 and others are still available to veiw or record……ITV2, 3 and others are not…… It depends on polarity and Frequency……….still….. its a very useful feature…..
I don’t think generic boxes have the SKY Â autoview …because there is no 7 epg…….The generic Boxes will have All Free channels in the channel guide……and manual channel organisation is needed……
I forgot to mention……with The Freesat boxes….you just enter a UK postcode of the area you want…….and the Channel regions are sorted automatic……
Also the Humax will highlight the channels available while recording another channels……. see pic…..(the black letter channels are still available)…07/01/2015 at 11:09 am #11550
How do you handle not having an EPG? And how do you advance program the recording of a program?07/01/2015 at 11:30 am #11552
Exactly …….Timer recordings I suppose……..like in the old days with VCR…..
I think Sony TV is FTV with a Sky box and  card…..not FTA …like BBC..etc….
Would not just  another Sky SD box be ok ?……..But be aware ….some Sky SD boxes have truly awful tuners…….The white Pace Sky SD  ones are ok…..07/01/2015 at 12:03 pm #11553
If I could find another Sky SD box then I would be more than happy. My current one was a Panasonic DSB30 and had a very good tuner (despite what some people think). I have now put on my reserve backup box which is an old black Pace 2200 – seemingly one of the first boxes ever made! IT takes FIVE SECONDS just to display the EPG, 2 seconds to scroll right just once, and 3 seconds to change channel! Super sloooowwwwwwwwww!
How would a Sky HD box perform (it doesnt have hardrives or owt does it? would it do the same thing for me as my current standard SD box (whilst providing potential for if/when I become modern and replace my existing CRT tv for a modern HD flatscreen?)07/01/2015 at 12:43 pm #11554
Just been googling: I dont think a Sky HD box would be suitable for me as it only has one scart output. I need two (1xTV and 1xVCR). Bugger.07/01/2015 at 1:06 pm #11555
Yes annoyingly Sky HD only has one scart output……..But….you could use the composite output (Red, white, yellow RCA  ) to scart  for recording….(as I have my sky hd set up)
BTW …The Amstrad DRX 890 Sky HD has excellent senstive tuners…..but not has  the 1 cable loop thru option the Humax has……
You do realise a Sky subscription is needed to be able to use the recording functions on the Sky HD box…?…..07/01/2015 at 1:46 pm #11559
I was of the belief, yes, that you need a subscription to use the PVR recording function. This is why I want/need a box that simply has the 2x scart outputs (as, like I said, the VCR scart connection sends out a ‘record/sat’ signal when AUTOVIE is actioned on a Sky program, and my Toshiba PVR automatically astarts recording based on this signal. Its VERY handy and stops the requirement for setting manual timers on my PVR)
Now, here is a complication:Â this seller http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171161740193 says of the Sky a SKy + box
“Scart inputs: 2 TV and VCR”
which is hat I am looking for. But because the box is technically its own PVR I wonder whether the VCR output still send the signal I refer to above. (It also does say that although its a Sky+ PVR, without a subscripton all those features will not work but it will still behave as a normal FTA receiver.) As I said if they behave like my standard box (with the signal out on record), and has 2 scarts, I dont care what else it has but cant acheive.
Im finding it difficult to find any standard Skt SD boxes for sale.07/01/2015 at 2:04 pm #11560
No point getting a Sky + box….as you say ….It might not work with your Toshiba …
How about this one ….the well respected for fringe reception…..Pace 2600 c1…..a fast box and sensitive Tuner….at 20 quid …bargain……
Are you sure Sony TV is still free to veiw…with a just a Sky card..?…Im sure that has recently changed…!…to pay tv sky card ..?…07/01/2015 at 2:39 pm #11561
OR! You could go for an Enigma2 (linux based receiver).
Can be set up to look like a Sky box (amazing what some people will do…. But they say they have to please the wife etc)!
7 day EPG, timers, streams to mobile etc, records to usb or internal disk & is not encrypted, so can be played elsewhere…. Can act as media player, IPTV player etc. Can receive On Demand channel downloads via plugin.
can define UK region and sort programs accordingly into Sky channel numbering…. Or not.
Can be used for Sky ItaliaSD or Sky UK SD subscriptions…. Legally or HD illegally!
…. But uses hdmi or composite.
But then you wouldn,t need a VCR07/01/2015 at 2:55 pm #11562
Cheers for the link Steve. I have just emailed him directly for information and peace of mind (it will be a long way from home to send back if it goes wrong). You sure that model is good for signal and speed? (I have taken your sole word on this and have no other way of verifying)
Twol: wooah! Far too much for me! I just want to buy, connect, plug in and watch. And that one sounds way too, as they say in job interviews, “over qualified”. And you say it composite or HDMI – I dont have HDMI and composite is crap on CRT tellys. (I use RGB with the sky box).  And does it do the record signal-out? and have 2 scarts? (I like the features of my PVR – its even better than any Sky + box has to offer. If anyone requests, Ill tell you why)07/01/2015 at 3:04 pm #11563
Its probably the best SkySD box for fringe reception……but there is no need to just to take my recommendation….in fact …that is the “white Pace”…. i referred to in a previous posting…. but i couldn’t remember the exact Pace model number at the time…………..http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=92810507/01/2015 at 3:28 pm #11565
Ok Steve, thanks for that.
Ive just realised another annoyance about all this: Ive lost all my FAVOURITES and all the ‘Other Channels’ I had set up (you know, the secret ones we obtain information about through the years of forum usage). Arse!!07/01/2015 at 4:52 pm #11570
after all this looking at ebay today…….I’ve sent a email to my sister in the UK… to get her to bid on this Humax PVR for me ( for our guest room) …currently at 22 quid…..fingers crossed… 🙂 ….07/01/2015 at 7:32 pm #11571
Is it me or does anyone else find this confusing. 1 seller, 2 items listed, same Title (but reversed) and yet 2 different model numbers. So what is what? Anyone make sense of this?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201085366208Â – Pace BSKYB2600Â Â (is this what they call the Pace 2600c1???)
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201078058116 – Pace DS430NÂ (looks exactly the same)
yet there are 2 different prices and one fella on Amazon says:
“Pace made two boxes that looked the same, Models were BSYB2600C1 and the more popular DS430N. Pace BSKYB2600 Set Top Box…
I believe the tuner in the 2600 is a different one to the 430 with a better performance for overseas…..
Only thing to make sure is the BSKYB2600C1 boxes have the latest software, they can struggle to update, there are no issues with the DS430N.”
Clear as mud to me. I dont want to buy the wrong thing.07/01/2015 at 8:15 pm #11573
Jimi…avoid..if poss…..unless it is really a  2600C1…don’t buy unless you are sure……
best to wait …”patience is a virtue”… 🙂 …..you have a spare box….so no rush…right…?……lots of other  2nd hand Sky SD 2600C1’s  on Ebay UK……07/01/2015 at 8:19 pm #11574
So you are saying ensure to get the BSKYB2600C1
Cant wait, Im due back to blighty next week so need to ensure I find one, reorder it and it gets delivered for when I arrive so I can bring it back.
you have a spare box….so no rush…right?
Well there is certainly no rushing with the spare box! Its not got a rushing chip on its motherboard! (4 seconds to change a channel?? Please! And to go through the planner is nigh on impossible.)07/01/2015 at 9:31 pm #11575
???….Ok…..I didn’t realise/know  you planned to pick up the box from the UK next week……..
Ill have a ebay UK Â search …just for you…….07/01/2015 at 9:34 pm #11576
I don’t know if the Pace 2600c1 is the same as thePace  DS430N………so…..no risk…no fun…?… 🙂 …….
Or check out your  local 2nd hand electro shops…….In my local town (Watford) I saw a few used  Sky digi boxes……..in the shop windows……07/01/2015 at 10:35 pm #11577
:D Cheers for that Steve. One of the links you just sent was one of the ones I quoted earlier (about the confusion). :-) (No matter, your help is appreciated. I have noted the other link too.)
In fact it is that supplier that I have emailed asking them for their clarification on their listings about both having the same titles (but in reverse)Â and they replied:
“…Hi they all tested 100% in working order, we double check the item before dispatch, and most of them are ds430 but both models works same, thanks”
So they think that simply being able to receive satellite signals makes them all the same. That said, the difference in tuner between the 2 models (BSKYB26001 and DS430) cant be THAT different that makes the DS430 so bad it would be a liability for me…..can it? (Im wondering whether just to click buy and take whatever model they send with no quibble, or to insist I get the slightly slower but more dependant tuner of the BSKYB2600).
Oh I dont know! Im crap at decision making!07/01/2015 at 11:06 pm #11578
Sorry……..I aways seem to go into “maxing out the sat signal is everything mode ” Due to my location and the problems I have in the Astra footprint………………
But with yours and Derek’s  signal levels……I think you will be ok with most Sky SD or any other STB……..
Good luck with what ever model  you chose  …………..Hopefully you will get a nice Pace 2600 C1 … 🙂 ………08/01/2015 at 2:50 pm #11579
I had an answer back fro that guy (who did the double listing) saying that they ar all DS430N and no BSKYB2600C1’s. Just as well I asked him for clarification. It seems he thinks that as long as the body shape and colour looks the same then it must be (despite the actual model number saying different and the technical differences inside).
